Cultural Report Summary- Robert Edwards

This semester I decided to learn more about small towns. Coming from a big city I have never really been around people from small towns. The goal of this project to me was two things, first learn more about what it means to be from a small town. Also to grow closer to my best friend, who is from a small town. I sat down with my friend Tyler Brown and interviewed him, I also visited his hometown Bloomfield, Nebraska.

The person I decide to interview for this process is my main man Tyler Brown. TB and I first met freshman year when we both lived on the same floor. TB and I quickly became good friends. TB always talked about his hometown and I was shocked to find out his graduating class was less than 20 people, coming from a school with over 500 people in my graduating class. One of the biggest debates me and TB have is which is better 8 man or 11 man football. We all know 11 man football is better however TB still thinks 8 man is better. TB felt so comfortable with me he invited me back to his hometown for a weekend.

TB and I went back to his hometown a few weeks ago. During the trip I got to learn a lot about where TB grew up and also about small towns. It was fun to see how people from that small towns live. It was also difficult to be in a town with no fast food or wal-mart. I also got to spend some time on a farm which I have never done before. Like I said before I spent my whole life in a city and the 3 days I spent in Bloomfield was a nice change of pace. Also during the weekend I became good friends with some of TB's friends from high school. I had such a good time in Bloomfield that I invited him and his friends to  my hometown to show them how us city boys live. It was a trip that was a blast for all involved.

During my Interview and trip I picked up on one key theme and that is  cultural identity. TB and his friends are very proud to be from a small town. They understand being from a small town means they are hard working, family oriented group of people. I learned a lot from TB and during this process I can see our friendship has grown stronger. My trip to Bloomfield and TB's trip to Overland Park has taught both of us more about how the other lives. Me and TB are planning to live with each other next year and I think during that time we will learn a lot more about each other. I learned a lot about small towns during this process and enjoyed every minute of this process.
