In this day and
age our generation rarely stops and notices all of the pop culture and cultural
stereotypes surrounding our every move. According to Martin &Nakayama
popular culture refers to those cultural products that most people share and
know about, including television, music, videos, and popular magazines. Ever
since this learning unit, I have noticed more and more pop culture throughout
everything that I do, hear, and see.
I have been paying close attention to The
Today Show as I watch that every morning. The first instance that I came across
was instead of just watching this show for news, I am watching for gossip, the
newest trends, and what should be in your home for this spring. A section that
stood out to me was with Kathie Lee and Hoda. They are constantly filling us in
on the latest gossip while drinking their wine at 10:00 a.m.
Secondly, I have
noticed that there is a lot of weigh on who is performing on the show. The most
recent performer was Idina Menzel, the focus of her appearance was due to the
popularity of “Let It Go” performed on Frozen. The second focus of her
appearance was on the different covers that have been done on the song. “Let It
Go” has been performed in almost every single language and this was made out to
be a big deal, in the end this all leads back to stereotyping.
The following clip
from the Kathie Lee and Hoda Today Show is portraying women as people who have
nothing better to do than drink and discuss things that are not relevant to
better your life.
Everything that I
noticed while watching this show I had not necessarily noticed before I had
read this chapter over pop culture. We all need to take a little more time and
realize what is right in front of us and try to be a little more proactive
about stereotyping.

This is very true. It seems as though popular culture is becoming more and more focused on trivial things such as gossip and beauty. Especially news shows tend to fill their slots with these things because they think this what people want to see and when is going to capture their attention the most.
