My Identify is something that is still developing to me. When I was in high school I though I knew who I was, then I got to college and began to change the way I live. Through out high school most of the things I believed was based on what my parents have told me, however, when I got to college I began to think more for myself. With this new found freedom I developed a new identity. Identity is defined as “the concept of who we are” (Martin and Nakayama, 2013). So the question is who am I? Honestly I don't know who I am yet, and I love that. That is the good thing about college, you can be anything you want.
There are different types of perspectives on identity. critical perspective can be defined as is how our identity is shaped through social structure. When we talk and communicate with others that is called interpretive identity. Last but not least social science is the identity we develop when we are in groups.
I decide to write about a article that caught my eye on globalpost.com, it is a article about a South Africa women running for prisdent. I was attracted to this article because I am african american and also with the recent death of Nelson Mandela, South Africa first black president. The candidate, Mamphela Ramphele is a medical doctor who was a former anti- apartheid activist. On paper she is a valid candidate, however she is facing the same problems that our current president is facing, their skin color. I believe, if Ramphele was white there will be no problem in her running for president. This article set the grounds for what is a big debate over race. South Africa is a country that has a history in not being the understanding when it comes to racial manners.
There a lot of identities in play with this matter. We have a African - American women running for
president in a country that had to deal with some pretty big racial matters in the past. It is hard to believe that a country that had to deal with this history is still having trouble dealing with issues like these.
Develop this blog a bit more and make sure you explicitly answer all the questions and provide the proper amount of depth for each part. You started heading in that direction with the discussion of identity, but then it felt like your blog ended abruptly What are some examples from your current event? What lessons can we take away form this?
