Molly McLaughlin: Intro to cultural reporter project

Culture plays a large part in how we act, think and believe.  It is in fact a set of shared behaviors and beliefs that bring people together.  I was raised by middle class, hardworking, catholic, Democrat parents.  They created a certain type of familial culture for my brothers and I, which eventually led me to hold similar beliefs.  With that the culture that I have decided to explore is that of the republican American.  Living in a red state a majority of politics ever discussed is in the realm of the Republican party.  This group as a culture has their own television shows, television stations, radio stations, newspapers and magazines all of which help share the thoughts and ideas of their group.

My plan on how to approach this group will be to start watching fox news, read up on this regarding the republican beliefs and by interviewing my friends and other students who consider themselves republican.  Being a democrat who is currently engaged to a republican political science major, I am excited to dive into this topic a little more.  Also  There are groups on campus that are focused completely on political parties, one of which is the UNL College Republicans, I plan to reach out to them so that I can gather info on what they do and who belongs to their group.  One thing I am really interested in knowing more about is, at our age, how often young adults join or related to a political party based on how their families had raised them rather than actually sharing the same beliefs with others in the group.
