Culture is defined as “culture is learned patterns of behavior and attitudes shared by a group of people” Martin and Nakayama (2013). I had a hard time trying to find a culture that I didn't already have some knowledge of. I am a African American male who grew up in a predominately white area of Kansas. Since I was kid my parents have tried to introduce me to as many cultures as they could. I was lucky enough to see a lot of cultures before I came to UNL, however, there was one that I didn't really get to see as much as the rest. I'm not really sure if you can call this group of people a culture at all, but it is people from a small town.
I grew up Overland Park, Kansas. It is a pretty big place to grow up. My senior class I graduated had over 500 kids in it, so when I came to UNL and people told me that their graduating class had nine kids in it I was shocked. I have never been around so many people from small towns. I quickly realized their mindset is totally different from mine. I became friends with a few kids from small towns and talking to them over these pst few years I learned a little bit about what it means to be from a small town.
Over the course of this semester I plan on learning more about people from small towns. Like I said before I have friends from small towns that I plan on interviewing, also I want to go visit a small town here in Nebraksa. I am excited to learn more about the small town culture in the coming weeks.
