Introduction Blog #2- Kate Nevanen

For the project I decided to choose a group at UNL called Spectrum. Spectrum is a supportive group for the lesbian, gay, and transgender community. The goals of this group are to create and comfortable environment, maintain dignity and integrity of this culture on campus, providing information on politics that would affect their culture, and creating events that advocate for the LGBTQA community.

Culture is defined as learned patterns of behavior and attitudes shared by a group of people (Nakayama, 88). The Spectrum group is a culture on campus for many reasons. All of these people follow different behaviors or attitudes on their sexual orientation than considered the “norm” in our society. This culture tends to communicate differently with each other than those that are not in this community. This culture includes many people who are in search of their identity and people with common behaviors or attitudes give them the ability to find out who they are. To study this group I plan to use two basic methods, the participant observation and the qualitative method. The participant observation will allow me to interact with people in this culture to get a better understanding of them and the culture as a whole. I will use the qualitative method while I observe the group to get a better meaning and understanding of their behaviors. I plan to study the Spectrum group by attending some of their Thursday night social hours and meeting, and interviewing some of the members. I am excited to meet people from this culture on UNL’s campus.
