"How culture is defined determines how it is studied" (Martin & Nakayama 2013). I come from a very strong family background. My family could also be described as traditional; I have a mom, dad, brother and we all live in the same house. The group that I want to study is a non traditional family. Whether that be a single mom who raised her children or a family that was raised by their grandparents or a family raised by same sex marriage. I can't relate to any of these types of families which is why I want to learn more about them and why they are the way they are.
It is important for you to know that I know nothing about these types of families. I'm going in unbiased and I plan to keep my mind and eyes open. Family is the most important thing in my life and I cherish them more than anything. They are there for me and love me no matter what. I believe that without my family I wouldn't be who or where I am today. A family is a support system that gives you the drive you need to succeed.
I am apart of a sorority so finding a non traditional family won't be that difficult. I plan on asking one of my sisters if I can interview her family members. I want to know more about them and how their life is. I plan on participating in a family function or even if just going to dinner and being surrounded by them. I want to know what kind of atmosphere they live in. I do realize that this type of subject could be very touchy, so I'm going in with a kind heart in hopes that this family will trust me and the reasons why I want to know more about them!
