According to Martin and Nakayama, psychologist Paul Eckman through research discovered six basic facial expressions: happiness, sadness, disgust, surprise, anger, and fear. All of these expressions are universal through intercultural communication. Anyone can read someone's body language and figure out how they're feeling, but when we try to communicate these expressions over writing then things can get mixed up. In today's society everything is communicated through social networks, magazines, blogs, etc. We are losing that communication aspect when in public situations. Since I have written about sexuality before I figured I would use that topic again. So many people have so many different opinions about gays and lesbians, but everything is communicated over social networks, etc.
I know that we were supposed to choose something that came out in the past year, but I thought that Ellen Degeneres would be something good to talk about because it's an ongoing thing. Ellen might be the most openly gay woman in the entire world, but she's proud of it. She embraces it. I'm sure that people still antagonize her about it and I'm sure they still show hatred towards her. Ellen came out on Oprah in front of millions of people. She wanted to communicate with others through her own words instead of in tabloids or magazines where people could have put words into her mouth.
I believe that because Ellen is so open that it makes people respect her. It's amazing the kind of
reaction people can get from good communication. Our world would be more successful if we had better communication because physical facial expressions is better interpreted than over texting or social networks. If someone were to send a text to me in all caps I would automatically assume they were yelling at me or mad at me when in reality they could maybe just be really excited about something. People mistake things over texting all the time and if texting didn't exist then things like that wouldn't occur.
Make sure you are explicitly addressing all of the questions in the blog prompt. In this blog, you were asked to find a current event example that demonstrates the power of language and labels. For instance, people wrote about the use of the f, n, and r words and give a few examples from the media.
