On February 23 Collins signed a 10 day contract With the Brooklyn Nets, making Collins the first openly gay player to play in the NBA. Collins jersey quickly became the vest selling jersey in the NBA. Collins jersey is more then just a jersey, Collins wears No. 98 in honor of Matthew Shepard, a gay man who was tortured and murdered in 1998 at the age of 21.
I decide to use this example as a case of a non-dominate group in todays news, for the rest of Collins life he won't be remembers as a good basketball player but he will be labeled as the gay basketball player. I hate to say it but it is true, when you think about Collins you think about the fact he is gay more than anything else.
The LBGT community has always been a non- dominate group. They have always had labels placed on them. With Collins telling the world his secret, it gives a face to this community. Collins is a very good role model for anyone in the country.

This was a good story, for sports and LGBT communities. HIs jersey sales were at such a high number. And the Nets donated all the earnings from his sales. Good story.
ReplyDeleteI appreciated learning the back story on why Collins wears the number #98. Very powerful. Make sure you develop a response to all of the questions posed in the blog prompt. Doesn't have to be long, but make sure each question has its own paragraph.
